You don’t have to take on the identity of your activity.
When we try a new skill, at least in my experience, there is a need to embody the activity as a part of our identity. When we try to play an instrument, we start to associate ourselves with musicians. In a way, we feel the need to take on the traits and perhaps the stereotypes of someone who participates in this activity.
Often we are able to convince ourselves that we aren’t a writer, or a musician, or a producer — so we stop. This is self-inflicted stagnation. We are essentially saying that pursuing proficiency in a particular activity is less important than our current image.
Acting to preserve your own self-image is really an exercise in people pleasing.
Because after all, what would they think of you if you tried something new?
🥰 when you take on a role- sometimes it’s necessary to break away from the ties that tend to keep you in a space of impossibilities- just that breaking changes your thinking, keeps you on the course you want
